CHICAGO, Illinois: McDonald's Corporation announced on May 12 that it would increase the average hourly pay at its 660 corporate-owned U.S. restaurants by 10 percent, bring wages for food staff to $11 to $17 per hour.

Additionally, pay for managers would increase to $15 to $20 per hour.

The pay increases are seen as a way to lure workers to apply for vacant positions.

The hourly pay increases, however, do not apply to employees at the over 13,000 U.S. McDonald's restaurants owned by franchisees.

Company officials said there are currently 10,000 openings for hourly employees.

"We are rewarding our hardworking employees in McDonald-owned restaurants for serving our communities," Joe Erlinger, McDonald's USA president, said in a statement.

Besides McDonald's, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Taco Bell and other chains have increased hourly wages.
